Kwame Baffoe popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been invited by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) over serious accusations he made against President John Dramani Mahama.
According to a letter signed by the Bono Regional Commander of the NIB, Abronye DC has been asked to report at the bureau’s office in Accra by February 26, 2025, to assist in the probe surrounding his allegations against the president.
The petition, addressed to the NPP regional chairman, alleges that Abronye DC publicly alleged that President John Mahama and his officials were hoarding about GH¢550 million at the Jubilee House to distribute to former appointees of the past government. He went as far as to claim misconduct on the part of the president to turn the revocation of the former government’s appointments into corruption.
The National Investigation Bureau therefore finds it appropriate to summon Abronye DC over the validity of the allegations made against the person in question and any information or evidence available to him to substantiate such claims. The invitation follows the serious matter of his invitation by the NIB having been accused of financial mismanagement and corruption at the very highest levels of government.
Abronye DC, who is noted for being a fierce critic of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the party’s leaders, has a record of controversial political comments his claims have come under sharp scrutiny from Ghanaians, some calling on him to back up his theories with proof, while others view his latest comments as an attempt by the NPP government to discredit a critic.
Supporters of President Mahama have, however, added that Abronye’s statements are unfounded propaganda intended to damage the reputation of the NDC leader. They say such allegations are a planned effort to keep the public’s attention away from issues facing the nation in the run-up to the 2024 elections.
With Abronye DC scheduled to appear before the NIB in the coming days, many Ghanaians will be eagerly following events to find out if he will produce evidence to back his claims or if his actions will get him into trouble for making false accusations. With Ghana headed for yet another year of the high-stakes political game over the control of State resources, this case could have far-reaching implications for both the NPP and the NDC.
