Mary Lou Retton DUI Arrest: Bodycam Footage & Mugshot Released

Bodycam footage and mugshots of Olympic gold medalist Mary Lou Retton‘s drink and drive (DUI) arrest were made public on Tuesday. The 57-year-old former gymnast was arrested on May 17 in an AutoZone parking lot in West Virginia.

In the video, Retton is seen wearing a yellow shirt and brown shorts when police stop her on the street. She first said “Oh my God” when instructed to do a sobriety test, and then moments later became a little aggressive. When the officer asked her to maintain her balance, she said in irritation, “Oh, come on!”

Talk of the Texas license, but was not accompanied

Although she was stopped in West Virginia, Retton told police she only had a Texas-issued driver’s license, but she did not have that on her at the time. She only had her passport.

When the officer asked for a Breathalyzer test, Retton refused to take it, which also led to her facing an additional charge.

During the arrest, she became emotional and said on the phone to a family member, “Oh my God, Gia. They think I’m drunk.” The family member tried to talk to police at the scene, but police handcuffed Rayton and took her to the station.

Upon arrival at the station, Rayton told an officer, “I mean, seriously… I know you know who I am.”

Criticism and apology

News of Mary Lou Retton’s arrest was made public in late May. According to official records, she was arrested for “driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or controlled substances.” According to reports, she was driving her Porsche in an erratic manner, and a bottle of alcohol was found in the car.

Speaking to “Entertainment Tonight” after her court appearance, Retton said: “I take full responsibility for my mistake. What happened was absolutely unacceptable. I am not making any excuses.
