Google is reportedly testing a dedicated Gemini button right on the Android lock screen. With this move, the company is planning to further integrate its generative AI assistant into Android phones. This button will provide users with instant access to the Gemini chatbot without needing to unlock their devices. Currently, Android users can access Gemini by long-pressing the power button, using home button actions or gestures, or through voice commands. However, a lock screen button would offer a more prominent and convenient way to launch the AI assistant. By increasing accessibility and visibility, Google aims to encourage wider adoption and usage of its generative AI technology.
Gemini button Android lock screen: How it may work
Google is testing a non-functional button on the lock screen which is hidden within the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2. According to a report by Android Authority, that may be designed for Gemini. The button, features a sparkle icon commonly associated with AI and is expected to provide quick access to generative AI features.
While the button’s exact purpose remains unclear, it may be a testing ground for features in the upcoming Android 16 release. This new version of Android is expected to include UI changes and new AI capabilities.
A dedicated lock screen button could offer convenient access to these features, but it may also clutter the interface. Google can even decide to keep the button available only for Google engineers to experiment with upcoming AI features in Android 16.
Set to launch in Q2 of next year, Android 16 is expected to bring multiple changes, including UI updates to notifications and Quick Settings, along with a new Advanced Protection mode. Considering Google’s focus on AI, this dedicated lock screen button could provide quick access to the new AI features that are expected to arrive with Android 16.
